Partitioning a Hard Drive

i just bought an external hard drive 500GB/gtech
do i have to Partitioning the external Hard Drive, for better use or it doesn't matter?

Partitioning the drive creates two volumes that the computer sees. This is useful in certain circumstances.

What do you mean by "better use"?
What will you be using the drive for?

to backup my computer,and make it bootable

if i partition it on 2 volumes ,for what I can use the second volume,please?

for what circumstances is useful to partition it,plz?

you can use it to keep everything organised. And when you use other settings it will be more integrated into mac (when it's mac journaled).
