Partitioning an External Drive

I'm trying to add a second partition to my external HD. It's a 250gb drive, with about 60gb of information on it.

I want to add a 100gb partition for time machine use only. However, when I go into disk utility, it begins "Creating partion map", then it will stop, saying ERROR.


Any ideas?

Have you tried completely wiping it clean, THEN partitioning it?

I don't want to wipe it clean. There are some files on there that I can't lose, and I have nowhere else to put them at the moment.



I actually just figured it out. Stupid old me didn't repair the disk first. Simple disk repair followed by a partition, and it worked wonderfully!
