I am trying to partition my Macbook to install Windows and am having the following error

"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
-Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."

This is a common error
Basically you have the space, but it is not contiguous (all together)

Some (not all) have had success with iDefrag, to get the space together

Others have cloned their system with something like Carbon Copy Cloner, erased the HDD and cloned back

Thanks! Im going to go the Carbon Copy route because i could use a backup anyways

I've used both iDefrag and CCC, for different reasons. My opinion is backing up/formatting/restoring is a safer approach since your data will largely be untouched. With iDefrag, while relatively safe carries some risk when you reorg your data in place.

Good luck, and let us know if you have any other questions about the process!

If im backing up to a Hard Drive that already has my iMac's data, the previous data will not be overwritten right?

Ok i finished backing up my hard drive using carbon cloner. What next? lol sorry im a noob with these things
