Partitioning Hard Drive

I've just taken delivery of a gorgeous iMac which I've had BTO to include a 400GB hard drive.

I use Photoshop quite a lot and intend to delve into Final Cut Express and iMovie too in the near future.

I've read articles about partitioning the hard drive and I would like to know whether this is something i should do. What benefits will it give me?

Also, if it is worth doing, how many sections should I break it down to and what sizes?
