Im new to mac, and Im pretty sure my question will seem stupid, but Im at a loss!

I have a macbook, and my girlfriend has a pc, I want to buy an external hard drive to partition and use the one partition for time machine backups, and the other partition as general storage that both of us can use.

Now, question is, I see bestbuy offers 'mac' harddrives, but does it really matter?

Is it possible for me to buy a regular HDD, plug it into my mac (which now has macFuse and NTFS 3g installed), and use the disc utility to create the two partitions, one as the mac ox extended (presumably because timemachine only works with this fiesystem?) , and the other partition as NTFS for both of use to use for files?

Thanks!

Yes. That's the way I'd recommend doing it.
