Any reason why you ask? You only need to enter it in once after you put it on. When the watch leaves your wrist, it'll lock and you'll need the passcode again next time you put it on.

Or...you can just have your iPhone unlock the watch.

Everyone I know with apple watches have passcodes. It's got access to your text messages, possibly to log into your Mac, and access to Apple Pay - no way I would not have a passcode. It's real good about not asking for a passcode unless you take the watch off.

This ^^^. I think a passcode is a "must." I have several credit cards in the Wallet app on the Watch, so even if I wasn't worried about basic privacy, there's a financial security issue for me. I would imagine that many other AW owners have credit cards on their AWs.

You can't even use Apple Pay without a passcode

I use a passcode so I can use Apple Pay on the watch, and so it can automatically unlock my Mac.

OTOH, my wife does not. Advantage is that she does not need to keep entering the passcode every time she takes it off, which is quite frequent for some reason. She still gets same access to text messages, etc.

What I would like is FaceID on the Apple Watch. But maybe not if it means having a notch

I take my watch off quite frequently, because it gets wet whenever I wash my hands or do the dishes, so I take it off before I do these activities, if I remember to, or afterwards to dry, if I forget or was unable to take it off beforehand. I also am not currently using Apple Pay. So no, I don't have passcode on my watch.

I’ve always had a passcode set on my Apple Watch, definitely wouldn’t consider not having it set.
No passcode would make it way too easy for someone to access data.
Unlock via iPhone makes unlocking very easy.
