Passkeys and Mac mini

As I understand, I could only use passkeys efficiently on an Apple silicone Mac mini, and then only if I was to use a Magic Keyboard with a Touch ID? No other option? I don’t think I’ll like the feel of the keys on that keyboard, and in any case I only have a 2018 Intel Mac mini which cannot provide Touch ID with that Magic Keyboard. The only other option would be to use my iPhone to scan a QR code on the mini’s screen whenever I want to sign into a website using a passkey? All seems pretty clutzy. Or am I misunderstanding?
