I've been using 1Password for several years and I decided to try to migrate to the new Apple Passwords app.

Selecting "Export" from 1Password was easy enough, and importing these into the new Password app was pretty easy, but extremely slow. I was prompted to add a browser extension for the Brave browser but not for Chrome; not sure why.

But the screenshot below shows a bigger problem: Apple's massive ego decided that they are always more important than anybody else. Many, many years ago, I'd saved passwords into Apple's keychain. Since getting 1Password, I've replaced all of these passwords with far stronger passwords.... but on Import.... no date checking no prompting... Apple decided that they're so important that 84 of the passwords I imported couldn't be used. Great! Just 84 manual imports. Thanks, bozos.

84 Passwords couldn't be imported:

Next bug... It can be nearly impossible to change a password with Apple's Password application.

Example: Visit website, login, select "Change Password." In the "New Password" field, Apple Passwords displays a pop-up, "Open Passwords App". Here, we can click "Change Password." Which would be great, if it let me change the password.

Instead, when I click "Change Password," Apple Passwords triggers the browser to launch a new tab of the website. And if I navigate to change my password, it will display a pop-up which launches the Password app... which will open a browser tab, which will display a pop-up, which will launch the app....

EDIT: I figured out that you create a new password by clicking the Edit button, which makes no visible changes but allows you to click the password field and it will generate a new password. I haven’t figured out how to customize the number of characters, etc., but I can edit passwords now.

I just uninstalled 1Password from my MacBook few minutes ago. Password app is a good replacement for my usage and I save some money.

Apple decided that risking data loss by overwriting the existing passwords was a bad idea, so the new passwords weren't imported. If you upgraded the passwords previously, you could have removed them from the keychain.

It would be nice if the Passwords app had a history feature for passwords like other password managers do. This way, you don't risk losing a password in the event of an errant overwrite, and you could still import the passwords and just have it ask if you want to overwrite or skip.

For my use, the Passwords app has a way to go before I'd consider moving to it. It needs the ability to store files, have multiple URL's assigned to a password, multiple vaults etc. just to name a few.

Yeah, I have some of the same "need to haves". Apple can be very good at iterating and improving products, so hopefully they get there soon.

No history feature? I'm surprised as I've personally needed to use this not just once.

I started with 1P6, rebelled due to the Sub model and bought Strongbox Pro but returned to 1P (sub) just due to the simple, yet powerful interface. I do hope the Apple App does well after some time as any competition is good for the end user.

I've had to rely on the password history feature many times due to websites having p/w restrictions and not finding that the new suggested password didn't work until it had already updated in my password manager.

I still use a separate password manager for myself, but I have my wife and kids using the Passwords app now. I'm quoting here to just point out that it does support "multiple URLs assigned to a password" — you just hit the little "+" button in the URL box and it will add a second one (or third or fourth...).

Still missing history, autotype into non-browser apps (as far as I can tell), and some kind of categorization or tagging, so I can't get myself to consider switching over to it fully.

Good that it supports multiple URL’s. I didn’t know that

But dumping 84 passwords without recourse is terrible.

I wanted to like it but in the end, my annual sub was up and i renewed 1P for another year. I love the CC management, files etc. it’s just a more mature app. But no pun intended, apples to apples, it’s rev1 vs what? 10th iteration of 1P, so in the end, we’ll see what a few updates brings.

The import process is not good enough, I agree. Migrating from another solution will almost always have some conflicts and a good app will have tools to resolve that. Hey, even copying files in Finder will ask "Replace, keep both, ...?" for conflicts.

There is also a basic flaw that probably never will be fixed - no way to use it on android phones. As long as the strategy to not implement icloud on android prevails, anything relying on icloud will never support multi-platform users.

As for comparing to 1pass - while a lot of users likely wants to replace that particular app, I don't think Apple should strive to copy the entire feature set. Keep it simple, focus on storing (and administrating) sensitive auto-fill data. Ie log-in and creditcards. (The latter currently missing, sadly) But calls for storing documents et.c. should be ignored. It should not turn into a behemooth. Focus on one thing and do it well.

My 1pass v6 uses over 3 GB of diskspace in Library and that is for just 900 items (no documents). That is more space than my entire mail inbox. (It is a "feature" to automatically save 30 copies of the vault as backup and it does so on every machine.) Imagine if I used it to store anything secret.

Yes, a history feature is important, because sometimes, you generate a new password which is rejected for being too long or having unacceptable characters.

Trying to migrate these days from 1P to password app. I've realized that I've stored a lot of logins that I no longer use over the years and important documents I can store in iCloud Drive. It is being painful because I am doing it manually from my Mac and it is 450 items. I don't trust the possible disaster of exporting and importing. 1P I bought it more than 10 years ago for IOS and then also for Android with backup on Dropbox, when I wanted to use it on windows I discovered the annual payment and was forced to pay again. It's a wonderful app compared to the austerity of the native IOS one but it's time to cut costs. Sorry for the horror of the translated English.
