I just got a new 13" rMBP running Yosemite. When inputting any password all I see is asterisks. I have 2 other Macs(running Snow Leopard & Mountain Lion) and with them I see the letter which then turns to an asterisk when I input the next letter. It is immensely easier to type in password when you can see that you haven't hit the wrong key before the letter is obscured.

Is there any way to make Yosemite act in a similar way?

This has never been the default operation with OS X. It's always just shown dots when you type the password so I'm not sure how you're seeing it with older Macs. The behavior you mention does happen on iOS, but never on Macs. I don't believe there is a way to get around this, and if you use your computer around others, it's not a "feature" that you should be using.
