Hi, on my pc I was able to set the machine to request mt password on startup. Can I do the same on my mac? So it asked for password before booting/logging in as me? I know this is possible from sleep mode, but how about when first turned on? Then if it is stolen no one can get into my machine... is this possible?

I think it's:

System Preferences -> Accounts

Set Login on start up (or something like that)

And, if you wish, System Preferences > Security > Require password to wake from sleep or screen saver.

No, not the same as on a PC (you mean BIOS password, right?). The only way is to use the login screen, which the others have stated how to set up.

For an additional layer of security you can enable a firmware password, which prevents booting from other volumes (such as the OS X DVD, which thieves could otherwise use to reformat and therefore bypass your OS password). I can't remember exactly how to set up a firmware password, but I think there's a tool for it on DVD 1.
