I am looking for a service that will allow me to securely upload a file and then obtain a web link to that file which I can then pass on to a recipient to download the file. But I want to be able to specify a password that the recipient will need to enter to download the file.

I have a dropbox account but you don't seem to able to specify passwords for share links.

box.net provides what I want but not in the free plan. I am willing to pay for the feature, but not $15/month required to use box.net. I would prefer a pay-per-usage service or a plan significantly less than $15/month.

yousendit.com has exactly what I want and has a pay-per-use option but whilst trying out their service I am experiencing significant performance issues with their site (site navigation is slow and and uploads often fail).

Can anyone recommend other options?

Thanks

P.S. I don't want to simply encrypt the document and upload it to dropbox. For ease of use (for the recipients), I want the download to be password protected, not the file itself.

www.2shared.com gives you password protected download links, and administrative links, to manage an upload. It is not as user friendly, as the DOWNLOAD linked is quite small, but it is free.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've had a look at 2shared. It does what I want but there are a couple of issues with it.

1. I can't find much info on the company/people running the service. My preference would be to use an established, relatively well known company for this type of service.

2. There is no personal login feature from which you can administer and track all your uploads in a single place.

So if anyone else has other suggestions, I'd still appreciate hearing them.

Yeah, that is one mighty drawback. Maybe RapidShare can help?

I have discovered why uploads often fail on yousendit.com. If the password added to the link is > 12 characters, the upload will fail. The error message that comes up when this happens does not tell you that a too-long password is the cause of the problem. Have emailed their support to tell them about it.
