All of a sudden I cannot sign into my Amazon account with the password that's been in effect for months/years. It is normally accessed with my thumbprint but it no longer works. So I check the PW on my laptop (which works) and it's different. So I tried that on my phone but it doesn't work, and now they're talking about passkeys, PINS, etc.

What the hell is going on?

I just logged into my Amazon.com account using Safari on my Mac. I got a window (which appeared to be Safari-generated) prompting me to set up a passkey, but I clicked Cancel and it logged in as normal. I don't think I've ever seen that passkey window before, so it looks like Amazon changed something.

What's the difference between a password and a passkey? How am I supposed to enter my passkey if I never created one?

I can still get into my account on my Windows laptop, but not my phone.

A password is something you manually enter and should remember or store in a password manager. A passkey, on the other hand, allows you to log into services using Face ID or Touch ID, without needing to remember anything. Passkeys must be stored in the password manager as well. I’m not sure why you’re unable to log in with your phone, but if you’re prompted to create a passkey, go ahead and do it.

Okay, so this morning I check my Amz account on my phone and it opens right up like it always used to do. I haven't done anything to it since I made this thread yesterday. I've had the fingerprint ID for all the accounts on my phone since I first got it over 2 years ago.

So: For 2+ years Amz has worked fine. I change nothing and all of a sudden yesterday I cannot get in with my phone, but can with my laptop. I change nothing overnight, then this morning I can get back into my account on the phone like it always used to.

Can anyone explain what's going on?

I’m grateful that you created this thread.

I converted some of my passwords stored on my iCloud Keychain into passkeys, but once converted, I can’t see the stored password anymore. It’s like a one-way route. Am I the only one?
