This isn't a case of biting the hand that feeds you; more like biting the lip that kisses your butt.

M$ is really on a roll these days. :D

I love the wording of the webpages informing you that you can buy a legitimate product key. How's it a 'Special Offer'? :p

Aside from basic trust issues--Apple, for example, does not burden users with Product Activation or any similar anti-piracy technologies in its Mac OS X operating system
GOOD! It makes reinstalling easier :D
Is Microsoft honestly making guinea pigs out of its entire user base?
Well, it's not like they haven't done it before...

Well, I guess this is how Mircosoft deals with its fanboys :p
Microsoft looses a considerable amount of revenue from the loss of Windows XP licensing fees. So many bootleg their copy vice purchasing a legitimate copy.

I like the way Apple does theirs. No key is required.

I wonder what would happen if Microsoft went to a no key system. I would imagine that their revenues would continue to drop.

Most of their revenues come from office, selling copies of windows to computer companies like Dell and site licenses to companies. I don't think they actually make a lot selling windows directly to individuals.

How many people actually bootleg their windows? Most people I've seen have at some point in time brought a system with windows on, giving them an OEM licence. Even if that machine no longer exists, they still own the licence.

Click-through EULAs linking the OEM to the machine are of very dubious validity in most places, and I can't recall any court case in the UK that supported Microsoft's particular licence rule forbidding transferring your licence to a different machine.

Against that, there are scores of people who have had no choice but to pay the microsoft monopoly tax, buying Windows even tho their first action is to reformat the disk and load up Linux.

It's slightly easier now to buy a prebuilt PC without Windows, but it was rather difficult for a while.

Selling software is Microsoft's bread and butter. It would make sense for them to put that kind of activation in their software. If a bunch of people pirated iLife, so what? Apple makes their money from selling computers and iPod.

Indeed. I don't know what it is, but every picture of that man I've ever seen has given me the creeps. I still stand firmly behind my belief that he is addicted to crystal meth.
