My friends told me that you have are charged a fee everytime you use the iphone browser. Is this true?

No, if you use it without WiFi, that takes minutes off of the data plan.

EDIT: If you're on the official contracts, data is unlimited

Wait. What? iPhone data plans are unlimited. You have to pay for the data plan ($20/mo on top of your voice plan in the States with AT&T) but the amount of data you can transfer within that plan is unlimited.

So, no, you're not paying to use the browser every time you open it, any more than you're paying to use the phone every time you call someone.

As long as you have the iPhone Data plan, then your internet usage is unlimited and is covered by the $20 cost of the plan.

The plan is standard with all iPhones on AT&T, unless you called them and managed to get it removed somehow.

This happened to me! I called to downgrade my voice plan and they eliminated my data plan. I'm on prepaid, but had the unlimited data. After I had called them with my voice plan changes, I noticed it was costing me a few dollars of credit to view a few pages! :p

So you can only use the browser over EDGE if you pay $20 a month?

Well, you have to have a data plan to use data services from AT&T (read: EDGE). I was under the impression that you had to have an iPhone data plan to use an iPhone on AT&T at all. Unless you get rejected by their credit thing and have to do pay-as-you-go or something, but I don't really have any experience with that.

Yes that only happens on prepaid, not on unlimited data plans.

In the US, if you sign up with AT&T on a regular monthly plan, they are going to charge you the $20. I have heard that some people have tried to get the plan dropped, in order to get a pay-as-you-go access to the internet - which seems to defeat the purpose of having an iPhone to begin with.

iPhone plan = includes unlimited data, no additional fee
Use of iphone browser / email / etc. on edge = no fee if you have the iphone plan
Use of iphone browser / email / etc. on wifi = no fee

Answer is NO, NADA, ZELCH, etc.

Of course 1 in 3 iPhone users are not on official contracts. Are you one of those 3?
