PayPal today announced that the PayPal Debit Card can now be added to the Apple Wallet app and used with Apple Pay in stores and online.

"Whether in-store, online or in-apps, PayPal debit card cardholders will be able to enjoy the convenience and security that Apple Pay brings to their everyday lives," said Apple's services chief Eddy Cue, in PayPal's press release.

PayPal Debit Card cardholders can now select a monthly category of spending, such as groceries, gas, or clothing, and receive 5% cash back on up to $1,000 in purchases in that category per month. Multiple cash back offers can be stacked.

The debit card can be used anywhere MasterCard is accepted. A new auto-reload option can automatically top up the card's linked PayPal account balance if it drops below a set amount, to ensure that the ability to spend is uninterrupted.

Do they provide a list of categories? Now that all cell companies make you use debit or bank accounts, getting 5% cash back for my bill would be nice

What's the advantage of a PayPal debit card? Do they normally charge a fee when you move money between your bank and your PayPal balance, so it's beneficial to keep money in PayPal if you use it a lot?

Not a huge fan of debit cards but this seems pretty sweet. My favorite CC is the Citi Custom Cash card which is $500/month 5% on top category automatically. This would make a great WinCo card. Any downsides to this aside from no buyer protection?

Mine says PayPal Business Debit card and doesn't say anything about 5%? Not sure why mine says business as I'm an individual and not a business, but I do sell on ebay sometimes.

PayPal is pretty much dead to me.

Their debit card was great if you were an eBay seller back when they took PayPal - you could sell and use funds immediately.

Without eBay, and now that Venmo and Apple Cash have taken over for marketplace/personal transactions, I just don't see a use for PayPal. Not to mention random emails saying they stopped a transaction, which according to various reddit threads, almost seems like a ploy/scam from PayPal themselves.

Venmo is a PayPal service, so technically, you still have use for PP.

I haven't used or even logged into my PayPal account in probably three years... I do use Venmo to pay for my haircuts, so they are still used in roundabout way, but definitely not enough to want their branded credit card.

Can you set it to just load as much as you spend at that time? I'd rather not have a random balance segregated from the rest of my accounts. If yes, I'm totally getting this. 5% is very good.

With T-Mobile, at least, you can set a debit card for autopay, but still go in and pay it manually with a CC before the autopay date to get your 5% back.
I have T-Mobile - there’s some folks on Reddit suggesting that if you do that the autopay discount disappears.

It depends on whether your account is prepaid or postpaid. I’m with an MVNO and pay with credit card. Also may depend on the carrier too.

You could open a Discover checking account and use its cash back debit card which will earn 1% back on the payment.

Another option is the Upgrade Rewards Checking account which pays 2% on T-Mobile. To earn that rate you have to have a direct deposit of $1,000 per month go to the account.

I use paypal all the time, and I was wondering the same.

AT&T is similar - If you have the AT&T auto pay set to bill your bank account - that method allows you the most time to pay your bill (before the due date) I believe they debit your bank account two days before the actual due date (of the cell phone bill) thereby allowing you to pay pay your AT&T bill with a credit card (as long as it’s before that bank account auto pay date)

if you instead choose to have AT&T auto pay using a credit card, they are very quick to bill your credit card - I believe instead of waiting until right before the cell phone bill is actually due, they bill the entire amount of the cell phone bill a few days after the bill is generated so you’re better off to have AT&T auto pay your bank or debit card (instead) and then set a reminder on your phone to pay your AT&T cell phone bill using your credit card 2 to 3 days before AT&T is scheduled to bill your bank account which would allow you more time to pay your AT&T bill (then with auto pay using a credit card)

Verizon is the only cell phone company that strictly enforces the debit or bank account rule - if you even pay your Verizon cell phone bill with one dollar on a credit card you lose the entire $10 per month auto pay discount for that month - even if you only paid a total of one dollar on your credit card and then the entire rest of the balance on your debit card

The only way that you can get the $10 per month auto pay discount with Verizon (and still earn some credit card rewards) is to sign up for the Verizon credit card (which I did) and then you get 2% cash rewards (in addition to the $10 per month auto pay discount)

AT&T also has a credit card through Citi that'll give you the $10/line discount.

I use the PayPal app on my iPhone regularly because I have the PayPal World MasterCard credit card and I use that credit card to get 3% cash back (on any online merchant that accepts PayPal) so I noticed that PayPal recently updated their app and that the new app reflected this 5% cash back feature on the PayPal debit card

I was able to add my PayPal debit card to my Apple wallet back on August 27:

I have been using this card (since I added it to my Apple Wallet) for the Mexican restaurant that I go to a lot and the 5% cash rewards that I earn from this card exceed the 3% rewards rate that I have been getting from restaurant purchases (using my Verizon Visa credit card)

Eventually though, my plan is to switch all of my restaurant spending to the Bank of America custom cash rewards credit card where I can earn a total of 5.25% in cash rewards (on restaurants) when factoring in the 75% BofA Preferred Rewards bonus:

Some of the offers in the PayPal app are really good - I noticed that right now, Uber Eats is doing 20% cash back (in addition to the 5% percent from this debit card) for a total of 25% cash rewards so I’m going to reload my Uber Eats account this week for $100 and earn $25 in cash rewards
