I have just bought an 80GB PB for my sister but when I set it up i discovered that only 62.5GB is available. Is this tiger that has used up all of this space? I understand that the formatting of the drive will reduce its capacity to about 74GB but where has the rest of it gone? Applications makes up about 4GB.

The way I understand it, OS X Tiger takes up about 14 Gbs....

Does it have iLife installed? If so Garageband and IDVD both use close to 2 gigs apiece. Also OSX installs A LOT of langauges and printer drivers by default. You can reclaim quite a bit of space by clearing a bunch of that off.

From my experience, I did an install of Tiger onto my iBook with 80 GB Fujitsu HD (74.4 GB formatted).

Tiger took 4.4 GB.

You could try removing languages and unnecessary printer drivers. It'll shrink the Tiger install to about 2 GB.
