PB Wallstreet Sleep Issue

I have a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet that seems to have a problem. When it goes to sleep, the computer either reboots or only turns on the hard drive, not the screen (the backlight doesn't turn on and I can't see anything when I put a flashlight up to the screen) when I try to wake it up. I am running Mac OS 9.2.2, but the problem persists with OS 8 as well.

Any advice would be welcome.
