I too have had issues recetnly, though i can't say for certain it started after the 1-10-2006 update. My PC's firewire port stopped working, i confirmed this by plugging in an external DVD drive and that also failed to show up. So i replaced the sound card (Audigy with FW400 port) with a USB2.0/FW400 port from newegg.com. Now when i plug in my iPod with FW it does not show up in iTunes, and iTunes prompts me to run the updater to do a restor. I try to do that, but it says it fails to mount the iPod. In device manager the iPod has a "!" with a code ten error saying something about a communication failure.

By the way the iPod does work when using USB2.0 and my external FW DVD burner works.

Any ideas?

The port may just be underpowered. It'd only be slightly so considering the DVD burner works though. Unless, of course, the iPod doesn't work on the PowerBook's Firewire port either...
