Thunderbolt 4 is only PCIe 3.0. There’s no point in making PCIe 4.0 enclosures.
Thanks for that info. Looking for answers on the internet really doesn't provide a good one. As to "no point", for now maybe but in two to three years time there will be. PC board makers are already there; Apple, as usual, is not.

The 2023 Mac Pro PCIe slots are PCIe 4.0.

We'll need to wait for Thunderbolt 5 before we see external enclosures that can reach PCIe 4.0 speeds.

I know about the Mac Pro but my goal is to own a Mac Studio with external storage. I should have been more specific when I made the comment about Apple being behind.

I guess I will just have to be happy I can at least get a new computer.

Thunderbolt is currently limited to gen 3.

You can put gen 4 devices in a gen 3 slot but it will work only up to gen 3 speed.
