I have a Gigabit PCMCIA NIC that I use on my Pismo. I have no idea if it works in OS 9, and I don’t remember the model. After my work week though I can check for you.

The card is a Netgear GA511. It is not recognized by TCP\IP in OS 9, but it does show up in system profiler. It may work with drivers? I'm not sure. It works in OS X out of the box. I didn't buy it for OS 9. If it isn't possible I'm sure there is one out there that does work.

This information from Cameron Kaiser, the developer behind TenfourFox, might be useful to you.

Personally, I know that pretty much any Global Village PCMCIA ethernet card will work with a Mac. I used to use them extensively with my PowerBook 1400, can't believe your PPC-upgraded 540C would be any different, especially if you're using OS 9. Here are some examples from eBay (none of these are mine). Take special note of the gray dongles included, as these cards are useless without them. You should be able to find Mac drivers for them here.

EDIT: disregard the eBay link, it didn't work the way I expected. But if you go to eBay and search for something like "Global Village PCMCIA Ethernet" (without the quotation marks), you should see several examples.
