I don't think pdanet is free. You have to pay for the app but after that tethering will be free.

Kind of. It doesn't let you create a wifi hotspot in the same way that e.g. MyWi does. You have to install the PDAnet software and create an ad-hoc wi-fi network on your Mac or PC. This means you can't use it to get internet on e.g. an iPad or iPod touch.
