Over the years, I have amassed a bit or two of data of DVD/Blu Ray backups. Figured it was a necessity with a [now] 19 month old child. Fourteen or so children's DVDs that look like they have been rubbed with sandpaper can attest the possible damage.

I have experience with NAS/DAS solutions coupled with Dune/Popcorn Hour set top boxes. In the past I have used this hardware to play 1:1 ISO rips.

That said, with a pending Macbook purchase for myself, I was curious what options are out there with Apple branded hardware to fit the same bill. I presume anything that can be ran through Apple TV would also be easier for the wife and guests to operate as well, as Dune/Popcorn Hour could be a bit tricky at times.

I would prefer to keep everything in 1:1 ISO format, but open to transcoding if necessary. All in all, I'm looking for the most elegant way to:

  • Provide storage for Time Machine backups - prefer wireless solution, but would like to avoid having both a Time Capsule and a NAS box - would like a one stop solution.
  • Play DVD/Blu Ray rips through Apple TV (1, 2, or 3 - have none, intend to purchase best version)? Am I looking to use HandBrake to transcode, and keep multiple files?
  • Best storage solution for 5-10 terabytes of data - iMac with DAS? Mac Pro with internal? Keep current NAS box?

The second point may sound absurd, but I would like to have something all inclusive for Time Machine backups as well, and have heard two or three individuals say unless it's a Time Capsule or DAS solution, Time Machine is not reliable.
