The screen on the non-unibody MBP that I purchased last March just randomly went dark. I think this is the second time it's done this in the time I've owned it. The screen went dark, items on the screen were faintly visible, brightness controls didn't work. Shutting down the machine seems to have fixed the problem for now.

Is the backlight on my MBP starting to fail? I've seen this happen on an older ThinkPad that I had - at first, the screen would go dark (power cycling helped), then after a few weeks it went completely dead. If it is a problem with the backlight, should I even bother taking it to an Apple store for them to take a look at this point?

The new Unibody Macbooks dont have backlights, theyre lit using LED's. You need to take this to the genius bar at the apple store, seems like a cable is snagged in the hinge connecting the screen to the main body, and cutting the LED power supply.
Its nothing serious, so dont worry, and its quite common too.
