The CNET reviewer captures my own debate between the two exactly.

The CNET review also captures it correctly, there SHOULD be better performance from the 6 compared to the 6 Plus, its smaller resolution despite having the same everything else without tablet mode. It is expected. Whether or not the drop in performance is worth it for the size, battery, camera, and screen resolution is another story.

Agreed, was trying to figure out how the 6s could outperform the 6 with the same processor/memory.

Yes, but Apple is known for messing with the clock rates to achieve fluid performance while maximizing battery life. So it's entirely possible they clocked them differently. Or not. We'll have to wait for better data.
