My trusty 2.16 Core Duo MBP from Feb 2007 is finally dying so I need a replacement. My wife has an old white Macbook that is probably in worse shape than mine. I'd like to get a machine we can both use so we can merge our files, specifically our photos, into one library. We don't do much besides browse, email, photo editing, etc. Nothing crazy.
I was/am considering a Mac Mini (i7 2.3 w/ 1TB Fusion). The plan was to hook it up to my work machine's monitor and use it that way for now. Problem is when I'm working my wife won't be able to use it and part of me will miss the portability option of using it on the couch, etc. Nothing an iPad wouldn't fix, just an additional cost, obviously.
With the drop in price of the newly "old" rMBPs, the 13" with 8/256 looks pretty tempting and is similar in price to the Mac Mini. It would also allow us to use it both with and without the monitor. Drawback is less HD space, but a USB3 HD with the photo library on it would fix that problem.
As far as performance, will I see a difference either way, especially when attached to a monitor? The possible Mac Mini refresh is another variable.
Thanks!
Ben
