Does Perian work on the iPad?
It works on iMac to run .avi files, would love to be able to run my camcorder .avi files on my iPad.
Any ideas?

No, the Quicktime/media player on the iPad isn't designed for plug-ins and Perian isn't complied for ARM. Only PPC/Intel.

I'm using ZumoCast for my iPad. It streams via WLAN everything I have on my iMac. Including my iTunes library. Very handy. Just a heads up, if you did not know about this app.

Re: VLC on iPad

yeah VLC should be able to do what Perian+Quicktime can do

I have been searching in vain for anything I can install on my iPad that will play .avi files. I have a Toshiba camcorder, which records only .avi format. I installed VLC on my iPad, and still cannot play .avi video files. It doesn't even recognize the .avi video files on my iPad.

AVI is a container format. VLC on the iPad can certainly play AVIs in general. You should find out what video codec your camcorder uses. Try to open one of the files in Quicktime Player and bring up the inspector by pressing ⌘-I. See what it say under 'Format' there.
What is perian?
