Fed up of having to use vlc whenever I need to watch an .mkv or other unreadable file, I searched for way to watch this using Quicktime. Was told that by installing Perian I would be able to watch mkv files and others, but I still am not able to open them in QT. Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?

Any help appreciated :)

With perian and Fllip4Mac installed I haven't had a problem watching any clip in quicktime except for flv's. mkv's play fine in QT7P with perian. One thing I did notice is you need to let them "load" first or they may glitch.

I don't have flip4mac installed - do i need this for mkv files to play?

Also I just have regular quicktime not the pro - does this matter?

Did you try a right click on the file and check if QuickTime is available in the "Open with" menu?

If not, are you sure Perian installed correctly? Can you see it in the "Other" section in the System Preferences?

QuickTime Pro enables the editing functions of the QuickTime Player. It does not enable the playing of aadditional media types. You enable the playing of additional media types by adding codecs. Adding the Flip4Mac codec enables the playing and editing [if you pay at least $49] of Windows Media and nothing else.

I think it may be working now after some changing of settings.

Thanks for the help - I'll be back if it hasnt done the trick :)
