Periodic Noise That Sounds Like A "Gong". What Is ?

Hello,

Should have asked previously, but has finally bothered me
enough to annoy you folks with what is probably
a very simple question:

Irrespective of what I may be doing on my mac, approx. every 10 to 15 minutes
there is a very loud noise that I can describe as a "gong". Very loud.

Any idea what might be causing, or what it is ?

My iPad makes a noise (I would call it a bleep rather than a gong) on news notifications, even when the screen is off.

Perhaps it's a similar thing going on here? Maybe worth checking notifications.
