The Perimice-513 is the wired version of this ergonomic vertical mouse from Perixx; a wireless version is also available. This mice works the same as any other mouse except it is designed so your wrist and forearm are in a more natural position and less likely to suffer fatigue and strain.
In the box is the mouse and a user guide. This is plug and play and therefore no additional driver is required. Build quality of the mouse is very impressive, it is reasonably light and manufactured mostly from plastic but it feels well put together and very good quality. It certainly feels solid in the hand and everything works in a reassuring fashion with buttons registering a solid click. There is also a stylish blue swoosh that lights up when connected to a computer. When you hold this mouse, your hand is at around 45 degrees to how you would hold a tradition mouse - not as upright as a joystick but nowhere near as flat as a traditional mouse. This means your hand is aligned in a more natural position when in use and twisting less than normal.
The top of the mouse has left and right buttons as well as a rubber scroll wheel which can also be pushed in as a middle third button. On the left edge of this is a DPI button that can switch the precision of the mouse between 1000 or 1600 DPI depending on the application at hand. On the underside of this where your thumb rests are two buttons for navigating forwards and backwards however these did not work for me under Mac OSX. This model has a 1.8m USB cable which is a sensible length for use with a desktop machine.
While it takes a small amount of adjustment when moving to this mouse, it really does feel great in the hand and everything just falls into place. It is very comfortable to use for long periods at a time. Perhaps the biggest adjustment is actually getting used to the height of the mouse if you are continually swapping between keyboard and mouse and you bump into the mouse while reaching some other items on your desk.
This mouse is designed primarily to benefit users with issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome or similar ailments and I since I don’t suffer from this, I can’t comment on the merits of this mouse in alleviating symptoms but it seems logical that it would improve matters. I certainly found it comfortable in use and saw no signs of strain at all. I wouldn’t have any issue with using this mouse full time and think it could be a sensible idea to help prevent issues related to the wrist and forearm.
