So I've been reading lots of posts about screens getting damaged from the keys. Is there some permanant way to fix this problem other than inserting something between the keyboard and screen every time you close the computer? Like are there a series of felt buttons that you can place that would somehow offer some cushoning power when you close the screen? What fixes do people use to solve this problem?

the keys shouldn't touch the screen if it does your laptop is defective. take it back to apple to fix.

If I close the screen and leave my Late08 MBP on a desk then its ok.
BUT after travelling in a tightly packed backpack, I open up my MBP and do notice squarish oil smudges on my glass screen from the keys, indicating there is some contact. Apparently even thos it is made from glass it does flex that tiny bit that allows it to touch the keyboard when the lid is tightly pressed.
