I just installed a software package onto my M4 Mac mini Sequoia and want to install its database on an external drive connected by USB-C (3.2). However, the application terminates from what appears to be a permissions issue with the external drive. If I install onto the internal SSD, it works just fine. I found this link but the external drive is grey and I can't seem to do anything with it (Settings > General > Storage). So, my question is, how do I set permissions on the external drive to allow the software to work with it?

You don't say what app - so hard to give advice targetted at the app. But it is likely you need to give it full disk access - go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and add your app.
