Permissions repair giving errors -- is my drive about to die?

Hello all -

I just ran Cocktail on my Macbook and got errors in the permissions repair section. Can I fix these or am I looking at getting a hard drive replacement?

Same errors.

I'm now booted into single-user mode and trying to run fsck -fy and it's getting I/O errors there too, so I don't have much hope for it being able to repair the volume.

Next will be calling Hitachi and trying to get an RMA.

I just hope that my Time Machine backup is good and not corrupted -- the system hung when trying to back up this morning and that's what led me to try and run a repair of disk permissions!

It could be a bad disk, but just the other day I had a problem with iTunes not being able to play my DRM'd music because of some weird "permissions" error (which it stated in the error dialog). I tried a few things (like repairing permissions) but the only thing that helped was a reboot, strange enough. So you could give it a try, just in case it's something weird like that.

An update. Hooked up the drive to a PC and ran a surface scan. Even the basic test told me there are bad sectors on the drive.

Now for the fun part. Hitachi will not do an advanced exchange -- which I think is just ridiculous. Most of the time I just wait for the new drive, put the bad one in the same packaging and send it back to the drive manufacturer. Now, they are being picky about how I package it and offering to give me a number for a 3rd party company that will send me a kit with a box and packaging for $15. Best part of all of this is that the kits they sell are only for 3.5" drives, not notebook drives!!!

I'm never buying another Hitachi drive. In fact, I bought a 320GB 7200RPM WD drive today.
