Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, mid-2015) with 1 TB SSD.

I recently had file system corruption issues that ended up with me erasing my disk and doing a clean reinstall of High Sierra (APFS, no FileVault). Since the reinstall, my Macbook now crashes/freezes randomly, multiple times per day — no particular pattern/app usage. I'm not plugging in an external monitor. At first I thought it might be Time Machine-related, but it's still happening after turning off automatic backups and keeping my external drive unplugged.

I have already tried:
  • Booting to recovery volume and performing First Aid (everything ok, no repairs needed)
  • Safe boot
  • Resetting SMC
  • Resetting NVRAM
  • Running Apple Diagnostic Tools (boot with 'D' key held down)
and the issue persists.

It happens seemingly at random, no fixed amount of time after boot, and no particular app usage pattern that causes it.

It crashed when I was watching a video on VLC (video paused, beach ball, fans went to full, and hung there for 20 mins+ until I did a force reset).

It crashed this morning while Googling faults/errors from Console in Firefox (no beach ball, just froze and mouse/keyboard stopped responding).

It crashed after I restarted it and walked away: just froze at some point after rebooting without me having opened any programs or touched anything since reboot.

There are lots of errors and faults in the system.log in Console*, but I don’t know enough to know whether any of them are fatal or just usual OS stuff.

Any insight/advice appreciated!

so we are talking about seeing those issues after a clean install?

Yes — I just reinstalled again tonight fearing it might be some of my old data that was using issues, and the one things I reinstalled were Adobe Creative Cloud and VLC. It crashed in the middle of watching a video on VLC…

The system.log contained
Code:
Finder[674]: libcoreservices: __create_or_fix_relative_directory: 959: __dirhelper_create_relative returned (os/kern) failure
right before the crash.
