Phantom Photos

I attempted to delete all photos on my iPhone. I downloaded them all to iPhoto and then told it to remove them from the phone. To confirm, I looked at my photo roll in the camera app, and there was nothing left. Yet, iTunes says I have 1000 photos, almost 800 MB worth, still on my phone. I can't find them anywhere. Where are they?
