I just purhcased a Mac Book Pro and I went through the whole setup from migration assistant forward and did not skip anything including the part where you enter your personal info.

Long story short i check my .mac today and it looks like i have an email from apple.

The email address given is News@InsideApple.Apple.com

And (with some other links for apple products (3 others)) they had a link for 6 free months of Mac World (https://w1.buysub.com/ (shortened because its only the top level domain that scares me)).

Is this just a well timed phishing attempt?

Well, if it is, it's a pretty lame one. If you follow the link, you'll find they're giving you the six-month subscription without asking for any credit card info. (And I received the same offer last week when I registered my son's new laptop.)
