Whenever someone calls me and I'm sitting in front of my Mac I contemplate answering right there in the right corner of my laptop. Every single time I do so I end up regretting it. It simply doesn't work. The person(s) in the other end cannot hear my – not even if I friggin' yell.

Anyone else having this problem? Right now the feature is completely useless for me :(

Furthermore: When I answer the call on my iPhone, for instance, the call doesn't end on my iPad and Mac. It goes on for, perhaps, five seconds. That's bollocks.

Probably the volume level of your built-in microphone. Open the Sound Preference panel and adjust the sound level as appropriate. I think there's a sound-level meter on that panel. At least in the newer versions of Mac OS.
