Hi all. I’ve got an 11max with the latest software, and I’m on an international trip, so my cell service is turned off. Just using WiFi. Should the phone automatically detect my location and time zone? I seem to remember my iPhone 6 doing that.

In the date and time config page, I’ve selected “set automatically” but the time zone line just shows a spinning wheel.

Any way to fix that (without enabling cell service momentarily)?

Thanks

I travel quite a bit internationally and I keep the cell service turned on to sync time zones. I just disable data roaming.

If you're paranoid you can also disable cellular data completely. The time zone set doesn't require any sort of data, just association with a tower which will provide the time information.

In most cases roaming with cellular data off you can still receive text messages at no charge, and you can always choose to not answer incoming calls, thus not be charged for anything.

It will work itself out, even over WiFi.

It hasn’t and doesn’t. I’ve noticed it on several trips. Am I mistaken in thinking that it’ll use gps to sort out the time zone?

GPS doesn't know about time zones. The phone either needs a database of locations and time zones, which I don't think it has, or an internet connection. My phone always seems to figure it out if I leave cellular off and wifi on.

My understanding is the phones take this time information from the carrier signal and adjust to that. At least that’s how my phone does it when cellular data is off and I travel internationally.

I've been on a cruise ship where the phone can't determine zone because the way the ship's WIFI is set - it has no location data - so have to wait until near a cell tower and do the no data thing

Thanks guys. Maybe it was just my imagination then. It’s surprising that it has a gps, but won’t use that information to determine the local time. Oddly enough, my ipad seems to manage fine without cell signals.

Wi-Fi alone allows the iPhone to determine the time zone and location. It's the same way your Mac or iPad can determine its location.

Restart the iPhone and let it try again. You shouldn't need to adjust the time manually.
