phone freeze problem need help

Okay now I have a IPhone 5C 8 GB and twice now my phone has frozen on the lock screen, I know how to get it passed that but my question is does anyone have an idea why this could be happening?
I didn't install anything prior, I was talking to my husband and I put the phone down when done talking he hung up with me fast cause of an incident, and I tried texting to let him know I was done and all of a sudden it wouldn't respond.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Yes, that solved it, but I was wondering if anyone knew why it could be happening?

If it is happening often it could be many things. Do you have plenty of memory available. iPhones do not do well when almost full. Maybe take it to the Apple store and have them look at it.
