”5g auto” setting should use 5g only when it does not drain much battery. However my phone gets very hot and battery drain is more than doubled compared to 4g even when just reading online newspaper.

Anyone else have similar problem?

And when you disable 5G, does the temperature adjust? Are you charging at the same time? Screen brightness up?

I’ve had 5G on auto since I’ve had the phone activated back on launch day and haven’t noticed any drastic battery drain or heat issues. Do you have anything else running in the background? For what it’s worth, I have background app refresh set to off and have my screen on auto brightness.

It’s the modem, mine does the same thing. But mine also does the same thing just charging with screen off. So I can’t even think about using it on 5G while charging or I’m sure my case would melt.

Apple online support and in store said it wasn’t at a heat level that was worthy of an exchange.. Are you kidding me they aren’t suppose to get this hot!

I live in a 5G(sub 6G) area and my 12P has been running 5G Auto since launch day. I haven't noticed any heat or batt. issues.

Your phone should not get hot to the point where it concerns you. I have my 12PM on auto 5G, background refresh on and charging, yet my phone stays cool. I have never even had it warm. I am a heavy user as well.

Nothing running on background and not charging. If I force phone to 4g it stays cool.

Had 5g auto on since release day. Phone has always lasted the whole day, most days enough juice left till the next morning.

This definitely sounds like abnormal behaviour, and something you should contact support over.

I dare say there will be wildly differing responses here. But I’d guess, like many others, I’ve had no issue so far.

Since day 1, I’ve had 5G Auto enabled, and neither heat, nor battery drain have been an issue. In fact, with my 12PM, I have yet to get to the end of a day with even a low battery warning.

My 11PM could sometimes get me through a day, though I’d normally need a little top-up in the afternoon. Of course this battery is brand new, but I’ve still been stunned that it’s had so much left to spare, considering it’s got a slightly smaller battery than my 11PM. It’s one aspect I’ve been very impressed by.

Thank you for your responses.
Seems like I should visit local apple care.

im having the same issue with my 12 pro max, heating heavily while charging using an 18W adapter + battery draining overnight 10-15% .. went from iPhone 12 to pro max, the issue still continues, I'm in a no 5g region.
