Phone keypad question

this has probably already been discussed a thousand times but what does the button to the left of the call button do? I am referring to the button with the person and a plus sign.

Adds a number you typed in, to contacts.

makes sense, i guess if i type it in I usually wait to add to contacts from the recent calls area.
