Phone number not being displayed in iTunes

"Other wireless carriers, such as O2 (UK), may not include the phone number on the SIM card and therefore it will not be displayed in iTunes."

How comes Apple doesn't make O2 write to the sim like AT&T. I've tried the method of putting the iPhone sim in a regular phone and creating a new contact called "Own Number" with my phone number and writing it to the sim but it still won't show up in iTunes.

I had the same problem, except my phone is an AT&T iPhone from an Apple store. I was able to resolve the problem with an old Motorola V-series phone. Menu>Settings>Phone Status>My Tel. Numbers and then input my phone number into the first spot. I know not all phones can do this and I'm pretty sure your numbers are stored separately from the contacts.
