iPhone 14 Pro Phone Number Transfer Question

I have an iPhone 13 on device payments verizon plan but I have one year left of payments. What happens if I want to transfer that phone's number to my new iPhone 14 from Apple that is paid off with gift card? I can't pay off that phone's remaining amount until next month at the earliest. But I want to transfer my number because I plan on gifting my old 13 to my dad. I also want him to use Verizon on it as well.
