Phone only works in Speaker mode

Can some one please help. I can send and recieve phone calls, but it only works in speaker mode. Has anyone else had this problem, if so how did you fix it....

is it a 3g? if so I had the same thing, if you check and put the volume up you will notice that it says Headset and not just ringer. The phone thinks you have a headset plugged in but your not. I had to return my phone for a new one.
