Phone reverts to LTE from wifi when screen locked?

When at home I am on wifi all the way but I noticed that the phone reverts to LTE when the phone is asleep.

I know this because upon waking the phone it shows LTE momentarily before switching to wifi. Is this expected behavior?

Yes. I think it will reconnect to the wifi though if data is needed but I could be wrong.

I get that with my 4S, it's odd but I've noticed when I don't have signal but I'm on wifi the wifi logo stays, I guess using wifi when u dont need to uses more juice.
