Phone won't go past displaying Apple

I have an 8GB first gen iphone, it is not and never has been jailbroken.

It randomly died on a full battery and went to the apple startup screen and now whenever I try to restart it that is all it will display before going dark again.

I tried connecting it to the computer and the it wasn't even recognized.

Then I tried plugging the phone into the computer while holding down the home button: nothing but the apple.

I tried holding down the home button and the on/off button at the same time: just the apple.

Any suggestions on what to try next? I live forever away from an Apple store and I rely heavily on my phone for work.

Put your phone into either DFU mode or restore mode and just restore your phone thru itunes
