Phones still bricked?

I was wondering if phones are still getting bricked when upgrading to 1.4? I currently have 1.4 on my iphone, I am planning to give my iphone to my friend, who has t-mobile, and get myself the new 3G. I am worried that upgrading to 2.0 will brick his phone. Obviously we don't know how 2.0 will affect an unlocked phone, but I wanted to see if bricking was just a problem with 1.1.2 or whatever that version was, or if it's an ongoing issue?

I think that Firmware 1.1.4 has been thoroughly hacked inside out and upside down, so I doubt there is much danger. OS2.0 has no current hack to jailbreak, however.
