Is there a way to make other languages mimic the input method of pin yin or Japanese input?

Example: In Japanese I type in English characters or Romaji. So if I type "nihon" in English it converts the text to "日本” The same is true in Chinese or Korean.

My problem is that I need to be able to type Thai and Lao languages and for these you have to be familiar with the perspective language's keyboard lay out. I know there are stickers you can buy to guide you but was looking for something a bit more eloquent. I would like to be able to type in "sawasdee krub" and have it rendered to "สวัสดีครับ"

I realise that not many people have a use for this but it would help beginners in these languages tremendously. They way the Japanese, Chinese and Koreans do it just makes sense to me. It seems to me that it the program already exists for those languages and could be copied or ported over?

I realise one problem here is there is really no standardised system of romanisation for Thai or Lao. Although this type of input method could change that. You learn the system and type it the same every time.

I have tried to google around on my own but I don't have enough of a grasp of what makes this possible in some languages and not in others to make this a very fruitful endeavor.

Maybe I am asking the impossible here and if so that's fine. I just want to know why this isn't possible and maybe a brief explanation of how these different input methods work so that I can educate myself. If it is possible but just not available at this time I would perhaps perhaps hire Thai programmers to work in this.

It is a challenge finding people with enough language and programming skills to even get any input on this one way or another. Especially as I don't even know how to articulate my thoughts on what I am trying to accomplish very well.

Thanks
