Hello Everyone
New to mac here, got a new 13"macbook air, lion.
and want to put a photo on the desktop but can't seem to find out how.
Any help and advise is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Do you want to change the Desktop background?
If so, go to System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop.

Or do you want to actually just display a photo in a frame on the Desktop, like this?
Screenshot_desktop_photo.png

If you want to set an image as your background image just right click (two finger press) on the file icon and then select "set desktop picture" option..

I apologise if I misunderstood your question.
