Hi all

Just got my first Mac and I've got the dreaded 'curating pictures' lack of progress. I've been reading a number of threads that say you have to sometimes leave it plugged-in for days on end before it completes!

I have about 14k pictures that I've copied over from my NAS. It's stuck at roughly the 20% mark. Once my MBA's fully charged, I like to unplug it. I don't like the idea of leaving it plugged in to complete the curation process (hopefully ) and damaging/overcharging the battery!

What to do?.... it'll take forever to complete while only being plugged in for a couple of hours at a time when recharging :(

Do you sleep at least a few hours every night? Most people do. Plug it in while you’re asleep, and forget about the battery. The Mac takes care of its battery. There is nothing you need to do.

😆😆

You won't damage or over-charge the battery by leaving the laptop running and plugged in.

Thanks for the advice....you have to remember, I'm a humble ex-windows user, not used to the Mac way of doing things. Are you saying the Mac 'stops' the charge once it gets to 100%?

Thx

If any battery didn't stop charging you wouldn't have that battery very long.

OP here again.

Quick question...does the 'photos library' file size change dynamically as it's curating, or not until it's finalised? It's been running for about 27hrs now, and it's still at its original starting size of 3.8mb! The curation process has been at the 90%(ish) mark for the last 5 or 6hrs now. If I do the right-click & Show Package Contents, I can then see several folders including 'originals' so they're imported Ok...I was just wondering why the photos library file size doesn't alter?

I will say I don’t think you will make much progress on battery. It’s a long process and it does make a difference if you have keep originals on your Mac or the iCloud as space is needed. What way do you have it setup?

Hi IngerMan - thanks for the reply.

According to Photo's, it's GOT to be plugged in to curate all the pics - my earlier posts were due to my ignorance of today's modern charging process, so ignore those...

All my pics were on my local NAS. I copied them over, via a 700mb/s wifi connected speed to the MacBook, and let it get on with things as I'd read it was a long process...but I didn't think it would be this long! I also noticed very early on, that it was also 'uploading to the iCloud' (which I'm not interested in using, due to everything already being backed-up on my Google Drive account AND my NAS drive)...so I stopped it, and unchecked the iCloud option. I did the 'Repair' database and off it went again!

I've had a look how it's getting on, and (as is the norm apparently) it's the People process that's taking forever to complete (currently half-way through the 14k pics...) Does anyone know for sure, if the Photo's app has to be Open, Minimized, Hidden or actually Quit to speed up the process?

Thx

I don’t think it really matters. I’ve always kept mine open and minimized and checking now and then. It’s like watching paint dry, so exciting.

At any given time MacOS has a zillion little things running quietly & invisibly in the background. Syncing iCloud, Spotlight indexing, Photos curation, syncing Mail, syncing Messages, checking for newly connected/disconnected I/O devices -- just for starters. Apple's way is to do most of these tasks very slowly so they don't dominate your CPU or energy efficiency. I know it's hard for former Windows users to trust your computer, but trust you computer. These background tasks are a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient and let them go at their own (slow) pace. Before you know it everything will finally be caught-up and your Mac won't even have broken a sweat. Trust Apple, they know what they're doing.

Well to possibly answer my own question...I came down this morning and it had finally completed! It had done the remaining 7k+ in 6-7hrs ...with the app closed down, as opposed to 7k in a day & a half with it open. I've previously left it both minimised & hidden, but had never done a cmd+Q, as I thought it must need to be at least running somewhere...

All part of the learning process & the differences between Mac' & Windows I guess.

If anyone else finds this post via a search or something, and/or is just getting their first mac too...I found that the filesize of the photoslibrary file won't actually show the true size until it's completed - mine went from 90% completed @3.8mb to it's true 36GB+ size once finished.
