Photo download from iCloud

Right, unless I am just totally daft, I don't understand.

What is the process to download photos from iCloud, to my Mac desktop? Example, I have taken a photo with my iPhone. Now I want to edit that photo, and then possible post it online. But, when I download the photo from iCloud, via my Mac, the extension is .HEIC. Hmm, what is that?

Thanks in advance, in case I am simply missing something very obvious...

Honestly, I feel like such an idiot. The flipping Photo app icon is right there on the dock, but, I go to iCloud via the browser to download the photo.

Honestly...! Issue resolved, it was PEBKAC!
